Living on the Texas coast means hurricane season, the odd hard freeze, and the occasional power outage. Keeping a couple weeks of food and water on hand isn’t doomsday prepping — it’s the same common sense that keeps a spare tire in the trunk.
What two weeks looks like
- 1 gallon of water per person per day (14 gallons each) plus a way to filter more.
- Shelf-stable calories you actually eat: rice, beans, canned meat/veg, peanut butter, oats.
- A manual can opener, a camp stove, and a little fuel.
- Meds, batteries, and a battery/crank radio.
Rotate, don’t stockpile-and-forget
Buy what your family already eats, use the oldest first, and replace as you go. A pantry you cook from stays fresh and never becomes a closet of expired mystery cans. Preparedness that blends into normal life is the kind that’s actually there when you need it.
Happy growing, y’all. Got a Texas gardening or homesteading question? Come back tomorrow — there’s a fresh post here every day.
“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who gives the growth.” — 1 Corinthians 3:7
